Waterways on the preserve also afford kayaking options. From the observatory tower are great views of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, walking paths, osprey nests, salt marshes and other natural habitats throughout the preserve.

Whitney beach is northwest of Longboat Key, the beach shore is characterized by fallen trees with exposed roots, and tree branches piled up along the shore. Residents believe the debris adds to the aesthetic look of the beach. The beach has amazing views of the Gulf of Mexico.
